Overview:

Tobacco has been a very large part of human society for much longer than most people realize, and its impacts are widespread in various areas. We will explore topics including:

- Historic and Native origins of the drug

- Child labor associated with tobacco cultivation (Malawi and Asia)

- The innovation of tobacco products (including e-cigarettes)

- The deceit and manipulation of the tobacco industry and advertising

- The targeting of youth and high school students by tobacco companies

- The development of cancer and disease due to tobacco abuse, secondhand smoke, and occasional smoking

- The dangers of thirdhand smoke

- The influence of tobacco on our campus

This course will present a lot of data (charts, figures, tables). But you do NOT need a background in math or statistics. The course will emphasize a conceptual understanding and will be primarily discussion based.

There is absolutely NO memorization, NO tests, NO quizzes, etc. Just come to class, ready to DISCUSS!!

Grading:

30% Participation + 20% Weekly Reflection + 50% Reflection Summary Paper
