About the Course:
Even today, North Korea is considered one of the world’s most closeted mysteries. The isolated country is still commonly judged only by the actions of its past and present. Enclosed in this shroud of obscurity, the country’s situation is the subject of constant speculation by the rest of the world. This lack of understanding and information regarding the North Korea often lends a view that is riddled with stereotypes and misconceptions. However, the country important to the volatile world dynamics of today and it is necessary to explore the idea of North Korea within its unique situation and significance. Within this course we will examine the historical components of the great divide on the Korean Peninsula, the outside influence of major world powers, the mentality behind reunification policies, and many more relevant topics. This class does not seek to create a definite idea or solution to the political social situation in North Korea. Rather, through documentaries, movies, guest speakers, and active discussions, students will achieve an open-minded awareness of this issue.
