About the Course:
If you’ve ever thought about joining the Peace Corps this class is for you. Eight returned Peace Corps volunteers will speak about their experiences in Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia. Stimulating cross-cultural stories, films, and field trips will deepen students understanding of the cultures in which Peace Corps volunteers serve. For example, students will read Nine Hills to Nambonkaha: Two Years in the Heart of an African Village by Sarah Erdmen, watch the Academy Award winning documentary Born into Brothels by Ross Kauffman, and meditate at a Buddhist monastary. In addition, students will read weekly news reports which cover issues affecting our world. These readings are designed to help students see the importance of the Peace Corps and organizations like it. And finally, this class will cover a few short term alternative organizations to the Peace Corps which include guest speaking appearances from Habitat for Humanity and Americorps. I have no doubt this course will be an exciting ride every week. I hope you will join me!
