Television Effects On Society
About the Course:
Television has played a huge role in changing society. However there is an ongoing debate as to how much television has affected society. This course will allow students to analyze television messages and the various effects it may have on society. We will discuss various social themes and the effect television shows may have on disseminating those themes into society. Each class will have a 45-60 minute viewing of a popular television show(s) which will relate to the theme of the class. Following the viewing, we will have a 30-45 minute discussion regarding the various societal effects of the message using examples from the viewing, our personal viewing, and assigned readings.
Grading will be heavily based on participation, attendance and assignments include a weekly one page reflection on the assigned reading and your own TV viewing regarding the theme of the week. There will also be a group presentation at the end of the course.
