About the Course:

The first class meeting is on Wednesday, 9/5 at 6pm in 101 Moffitt.

This course will cover a wide array of topics, from Chinese culture and political reform to contemporary economics and the business environment.

China is no longer the idealized, traditional society popularized in many entertainment venues. Over the past few decades, it has become a rapidly developing land of change and opportunity. With a GDP slated to pass the United States' by 2050, China has increasingly become a subject of fascination and concern to many Americans.

The goal of this course is to promote understanding through two means:

  • Firstly, to dispel any myths about China that students may have, and instead build a realistic image of modern-day Chinese society. This way, students who find their own futures involved in China are better prepared for what is to come.
  • Secondly, to encourage students to travel to China themselves and experience the country. This course is affiliated with "Cultural Exchange for Future Leaders", a summer program that allows college students to stay at Chinese universities and instruct English while touring the country.

NOTE:  The summer program takes place during summer 2008 and is OPTIONAL, although encouraged. More information will be given over the course of the semester.

How to Enroll:

All students are welcome regardless of background. No prior knowledge is required. Just be able to come to class every week and be ready to learn.

CCNS: CCNs will be given out during the second class (9/12). Those who have come (and signed in) to both of the first two classes will be given priority. This class has 40 spots (20 upper div and 20 lower div). If you do not receive a CCN, you are still welcome to attend the class.
