About the Course:
Art is a powerful tool for individuals and groups to communicate powerful messages across wide audiences of people. As such various groups throughout history have directly taken hold of art forms in order to influence and affect social change. Through this course we will examine how art acts as a venue through which various communities are able to dialogue, share ideas, and organize. This course will emphasize exposure to and direct hands-on exploration of a wide variety of forms and media. Through workshops, guest lectures, films, and discussions we will uncover the potential of arts to interact with communities in order to empower marginalized voices, strengthen community, and enact social change.
The different art forms that we will be exploring include:
- Graffiti Art/Urban Art
- T-Shirts & Stickers
- Poetry & Spoken Word
- Photography
- and other forms of Performance Art
