About the Course:

Course description

This course is an introduction to basic bicycle maintenance and repair. Students will learn the

fundamentals of bicycle safety, mechanics, and component functionality. The course is open to all students, regardless of experience level. The goal of this decal is to create a greener, healthier, and more vibrant community by learning the basics of bike repair and sharing the knowledge with others.

Course Format (Units: 1)

2 hr. lecture per week, taught in the Bicycal shop.

During the lectures, students will learn the theory behind the basics of bicycle repair and get hands on experience on all components.

Every class, two people are liable to be picked ‘pop-quiz’ style to demonstrate what the class learned last lecture.

5 “skill evaluations”. Throughout the duration of the course Decal students will be required to demonstrate that they have learned the skills shown in class, specifically ones deemed essential to bike maintenance: tube and tire replacement, brake adjustment (loosen pinch bolt, take off pads to start), indexed derailleur tuning, true a wheel, and overhaul a bearing system (i.e. hubs, bottom bracket or headset). These tests must be completed by the due date, generally a week after the lesson is taught.

Two absences are allowed. Any absences beyond two must be made up at shop hours (one hour per absence), up to a maximum of 2 make-up sessions. Excused absences that are made up will not count towards the absence tally. More than four unexcused absences will result in a fail, regardless of shop hours completed.
