About the Course:

Welcome to CalStar!

CalStar Yoga is a wonderful opportunity in your college career to both learn and help others perform yoga and Thai massage. This class is centered around assisting disabled individuals, who often don't see any physical activity in their lives, with yoga postures and other forms of exercise.

We have a large staff of volunteers from very experienced yoga/massage instructors to long-time helpers. Throughout the course you will be learning various yoga techniques and postures, as well as their benefits to the body (e.g. how do you relieve pressure and/or pain in your back due to a weakened posterior chain?).

There are no exams in this course. We have one (very) short reflection paper due during the last day of class, which is usually 1 page at the most. All we ask of you is to show up to class every day.

That said, attendance is mandatory, but exceptions will be made for a maximum of 2 excused absences. As such, the awarding of the two units of academic credit is based on attendance. If you’re interested in taking this DeCal, you should plan accordingly. DeCalers must be in class every Friday and attend all three Saturday workshops. This is very much a learning-through-doing experience. Rare exceptions will be made for emergencies that are authentic and well-documented and include appropriate make-up assignments. The yoga students rely upon the consistent presence of their helpers. Besides, this class is fun!

Class meets every Friday in the RSF Combatives Room from 1:10pm-4pm. First class meets on January 29th.

The three mandatory Saturday workshops dates have yet to be decided and will be announced in class.

How to Enroll:

There are no applications or prerequisites for this class; all that is needed is an open mind and a respectful and conscientious attitude. No yoga experience necessary!

If you are interested in taking the DeCal but it is past the date of our first class, DON’T WORRY, you are welcome to join us by the second or even the third meeting of class and it will still be counted as being present for all meetings and you will therefore still receive the two units.
