Course Description:

This course is intended to acquaint students with the films of Woody Allen in a relaxed and comfortable environment – this is not a serious academic film course. No prior knowledge needed!

Woody Allen was born in 1935 as Allen Konigsberg in Brooklyn, New York. He started selling one-liners to gossip columns at the age of 15 and later began working as a stand-up comedian. He is one of the most respected and prolific directors in the industry; he directed his first film, What’s Up, Tiger Lily, in 1966 and has directed almost one film every year since; he is currently directing Scoop in London. The goal of this course is to present a survey of Woody Allen’s (perhaps best) films, which range from slap-stick comedies to more serious dramas. Students are invited to bring their own interpretations and opinions of Allen’s work to discussion.

Requirements:

Regular (mandatory) attendance in screenings is required, as is active participation in discussion. Discussions will take place AFTER the film. If you anticipate missing a film-screening, you must 1) e-mail the course facilitators in advance and 2) view the film on your own time at the Media Resources Center in Moffitt within a week. (These films can be quite lengthy, so plan accordingly.) More than one unexcused absence will result in an immediate No Pass for the course.
