About the Course:

Course Purpose:

The goal of this course is to organize and facilitate an on-site math competition for local high school students. In doing this, students will improve their organizational and leadership skills by working in teams to accomplish various tasks.


Course Format:
At the start of each class, the student facilitators may give a brief announcement describing the  status of each group. Students will then split up into groups and work on their assigned tasks.

Groups:

  • Tech support- This group will be responsible for anything to do with a computer, e.g., websites, registration, maintaining a mailing list.
  • Publicity- This group will be responsible for things like advertising the competition among high schools as well as recruiting Berkeley volunteers for the day of the contest.
    • Graphic Design - creating logos, designing fliers, T-shirts, etc.
  • Writing and Test Solving Problems- This group will be responsible for putting together the test itself.



Tentative Calendar:

Tues. January 17th - Semester Begins
Wed. January 18th - First Class

Mon. Jan. 23: Assign roles, groups and subgroups. Begin problem writing.
Tues. Feb. 21th: Deadline for ordering stuff?
Weds. Feb. 28th: Close registration
Thu. March 1st - Deadline for creation of shortlist
Tues. March 13th: work out team logisticky stuff
Thurs. March 15th: Finish test solving process. This gives us time to fix the tests.
Sat. March 24 - Sun. Apr. 1st: Spring Recess
Tues. April 3rd: Deadline for final draft of all tests
Sat. April 7th- Date of the Contest
Fri Apr. 27th: Finish writing manual, etc. In other news, last day of instruction.

Grading:
Students will be required to participate and follow through on their assigned tasks. Grading will mainly be based on effort.

 

How to Enroll:

No special knowledge required to participate. Tasks and assignment will vary based on individual background. Course Control Numbers will be distributed later. Updates will be posted as they become available. Thank you for your patience.
