About the Course:

This DeCal will be structured as a criticism course that aims to educate Daily Cal arts writers and interested students in the methods of modern arts and entertainment reporting. “Practical Criticism and Reporting the Arts” will cope with the reality that it is more difficult than ever to be a journalistic critic. Critics are now expected to do a lot more than merely provide an opinion on a work of art: They are expected to recreate the sensory experience of the art through their writing, directly analyze works through the use of audio and video, and provide insight through and maintain cohesion in interviews and arts reporting. This course will teach students the fundamental skills and perspectives needed for creating effective criticism and accompanying material.

The course will be facilitated by the Daily Cal's current assistant arts editor Sara Hayden.

How to Enroll:

Enrollment will be restricted by course entry codes (CECs). You must attend the first day of class (which is TBD) in order to receive the code. E-mail Sara Hayden at to get on the priority list for the class.
