About the Course:

The purpose of this course is to explore and appreciate Tolkien’s Middle Earth and its history. Geography will be clarified, characters will be ranked in order of bad-assery, events will be analyzed, but mostly each class will consist of discussions based on themes or anything else of interest in that day’s reading. The readings are organized around specific characters or events in the Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, and the Unfinished Tales. We’ll also play games, and tangents are pretty much always acceptable.

By the end of this course you will know all about Middle Earth, from Arda’s creation myth to our hypotheses about the end of the world, and everything in between. You may even be able to tell the difference between an orc and a goblin, know how to kill a Balrog, find your way through Beleriand, or distinguish between Amrod, Amras, Aegnor and Angrod. If air-dropped into Middle Earth, you should be able to barter with both Elves and Dwarves while navigating the vales of Sirion. We are deadly serious about this. Hopefully, all of this knowledge will lead to a deeper appreciation of the Lord of the Rings.

Though there will sometimes be short lectures at the beginning of each class, the course is discussion/activity based, so participation is essential! Student work is evaluated on attendance, participation, and a final project.

How to Enroll:

We'll give the course control numbers out at the first day of class, so if you want to be in this most awesome course, COME TO THE FIRST DAY!!!!

Once you get your CCN, there is a lower division (98) section and an upper division section (198); enroll in whichever one is most appropriate for you. There are fifteen spots in each section, with waitlists of 5 people per section.

The class halves must be finalized by February 3, so yeah. Show up.
