What do Guitar Hero, Beer pong, Monopoly, Basketball and Tag have in common?

More than you think. A game is a game, whether played on a field, at a table or in front of a screen. People have been playing games of all sorts for thousands of years. Video games are only the latest incarnation. Hmm, perhaps all games are worth studying?!...

So, we will: DESIGN GAMES and PLAY them OUTSIDE on CAMPUS.

Some sample games we'll be playing:

(a) Several amazing variants of TAG.

(b) HUMAN SNAKE, 2 Snakeheads (conga line leader players) run around a somewhat crowded Sproul Plaza to capture fruit (standing players) to bring back to the Snake Charmer. Each time fruit is captured, that player joins the front of the conga line as the Snakehead.

(c) CHECKPOINT, smugglers must sneak random things (skis, a clock, pants, etc.) into Dwinelle Hall without getting caught by the border guards - to get past them, the smugglers will have to blend in with bystanders, bluff their way past guards, and coordinate cunning distractions. A game of entrapment, sneakiness and deception.

And yes, in comparison many 1 unit DeCals are only 1 hour of class time per week, but don't let that dissuade you from taking this course. The extra class time translates to extra "fun." No, really.

How to Enroll:

To enroll, simply:

(2) attend the first class at 413 Zellerbach on January 27th, 2009 at 3pm. HERE IS HOW TO GET THERE:

(Directions to 413 Zellerbach: Enter Zellerbach from the northside "Playhouse" entrance; go down the stairs / ramp to a door - inside, there'll be a receptionist whom you'll politely ask for directions.)

• If there is over-attendance then enrollment will be determined by lottery.
• Enrollment is capped at 40 students. (20 lower + 20 upper division)
• There'll be a short wait-list.
• UPDATE: There are many more people planning on attending than the number I can enroll. Don't rely on this class to fulfill your unit requirements because there is a fair chance you will not get in.
• UPDATE: sign-ups will be closed on the Sunday night of the week before class so I can go through the roster.
