Courses for the Spring ‘11 will begin to be uploaded after Wednesday, November 10th. A full list will be available during the first weeks of the spring semester.

Fall 2010 Semester

Office hours for the Fall semester have been posted. Facilitators who have yet to pick up their copy cards or anyone who has questions about the DeCal program can visit the office during the listed hours.

If you are interested in facilitating a DeCal next semester and would like to learn more about the process, register for a UCFTR Start-Up Workshop. Workshops will be held throughout the month of October and early November at the Student Learning Center.

The Academic Senate deadline for Spring ‘11 course proposal forms is Wednesday, November 10th. Some departments may have earlier deadlines.

DeCal/UCFTR Start-Up Workshops!

Are you thinking about facilitating a course in Fall 2010?

If so, drop by a Start-Up Workshop with DeCal and the UCFTR to get all the information you need to plan and start your own DeCal!

Workshops are on Tuesdays and Fridays in 147 Chavez Student Center :

Tuesdays: 4:00–5:30

April 6th • April 13th • April 20th • April 27th

Fridays: 12:00–1:30

April 2nd • April 9th •April 16th • April 23rd

The workshop will cover everything you need to know about the Course Proposal paperwork, finding a faculty sponsor, designing your syllabus and more!

Can’t make one of the workshops? Schedule an individual appointment or a special workshop for your group, club, etc.

Don’t See Any Course Listings?

UPDATE, Jan 18th 2010: We’ve tracked down the invisible course listings bug to people using Safari 3.2 or earlier. Mac users (or misguided Windows users), please update to Safari 4.0 – which you should be doing anyway to patch up web browser vulnerabilities.

We’re not sure why the course listings aren’t showing up for some people. We have a hunch as to what’s going on, but it doesn’t really make much sense. Please, tell us. It’s the only way we can fix it, because we can’t replicate the bug on our own computers. To help us help you, please e-mail us with the following information and include “Invisible Course Listings” in the subject line, or leave a comment below…

Take a screenshot of what you see at http://www.decal.org/courses/ and paste it into a JPEG and attach it to the e-mail.
What operating system are you using?
What browser are you using?
What ISP are you using?
Can you see every other page on the DeCal website okay? (I’m assuming you can, since you’re reading this?)

Our New Digs

(NOTE: DeCal is a student-run organization that is on vacation for the winter break. You can still e-mail us, but don’t expect a reply for a while.)

But in the meantime, we’ve upgraded the website to be less ugly and dropped support for 800 pixel-wide screen resolutions because our site stats suggest most of you are using modern computers. We’ve also streamlined a lot of the navigation to help you find what you’re looking for, and to make it easier for us to update the website.

Here’s the full changelog:

Site is now less ugly.
Added flickr photostream on the front page.
Added stats on the front page – we estimate the “capacity for students” by adding together all the class size numbers the facilitators give us (though if they leave the field blank, we assume a fairly conservative class size of 15)
Added dropdown menus on the navigation bar.
The “class location” for each course is now a Google Maps link. It usually works pretty well.
Fixed some bugs with filtering for courses… though there are still some other bugs that are difficult to resolve. Some combinations of filters will result in some incorrect displays. It’s a bit worrisome, but I’d say it works well for the most part as long as you’re careful.

Still left to do:

Fix page styles for all the facilitator control panel pages
Streamline the admin control panels on our end
Improve the “Favorite Courses” feature
Fill out the other two FAQs
