About the Course:

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to support, cultivate, and challenge student facilitators to be active participants in the perpetual process of teaching and learning. Throughout the semester, we will examine the ways in which we can be passionately engaged in creating significant learning experiences for ourselves and for our student learners. As we begin to explore this subject, we will do so by:

 Critically analyzing both historical and contemporary pedagogical theory and practice

 Learning how to create significant educational experiences through innovative course design

 Examining different ways of recognizing and engaging diverse learners with diverse learning styles

 Defining and clarifying the role of the effective facilitator
As we explore different pedagogical concepts and learning models, we will begin to formulate what, to us, constitute exceptional teaching and learning experiences.

Throughout the semester, you will experiment with the design and implementation of different educational experiences. Within this process, you will also have the opportunity to practice your facilitation skills and receive supportive and honest feedback from other members of the course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the term, semester participants should be able to:

 Begin to articulate your teaching philosophy

 Create a course syllabus and lesson plan(s) that more effectively meet the needs of a diverse group of students with  different learning styles and life experiences

 Learn how to use assessment tools to facilitate reflection on both your educational experience and that of other facilitators, by receiving and providing supportive, constructive, and sometimes challenging feedback.

 Learn how to be flexible and dynamic facilitators with the ability to navigate, observe and attend to the often complex group dynamics in a class

READING AND RECOMMENDED TEXTS
The Craft Reader will be available at Metro Publishing, 2440 Bancroft Way (between Dana & Sather). The amount of reading will vary, with a maximum of fifty pages a week. Some readings will be available on-line or provided by instructor. Additional resources are available in the Undergraduate Course Facilitator Training and Resources (UCFTR) library.

TWO VS. THREE UNIT DISTINCTION
Students enroll for either two or three units at the beginning of the seminar.

 The two-unit version is for students considering or planning to facilitate their own course.

 The three-unit version is for students concurrently facilitating a course. The additional unit counts towards the extra hours of work involved in preparing and facilitating a course. Students not already receiving credit for facilitating through a 99/199 independent study are eligible to enroll for this additional unit.
