About the Course:

The aim of this course is to begin to (1) investigate and form a distinction between the terms “social” and “political”, (2) to critically apply these terms to the methods and long and short term goals of a social movement or non-profit organization of your choice, and (3) determine to what extent the terms “social” and “political” can be effectively used as distinct concepts for addressing contemporary political and social issues.

The content of this course will largely consist of class discussions of the course readings which will be provided by the course facilitator. There are also 8 copies of Hannah Arendt’s “On Revolution” available for “book loan”.

Some of the readings will include selections from Hannah Arendt’s “On Revolution” and “The Human Condition”, James A. Gregor’s “Metascience and Politics”, the Midwest Academy Manual for Activists “Organizing for Social Change”, Albert Camus’ “The Rebel”, and, as time allows, documentaries such as “Why We Fight” and “The Corporation”.

How to Enroll:

There will be an informational meeting the second week of class at 4:00PM, Wednesday Sept. 6th in Wheeler 130 in which a more detailed description of the course will be provided and questions answered. Course control numbers will be provided.

The course will officially begin September 12th and finish two weeks before finals.
