About the Course:

09/07/06 Please note classroom change… we now meet in 2308 Tolman.

08/12/06 Please note change, this decal is 2 units – not 1, as originally stated.

This course is intended to introduce students to the client-centered, Rogerian model of student peer counseling. Through readings and a variety of interactive exercises, students will explore the Berkeley peer counseling model. Through education and open discussion, we hope to decrease the stigma attached to counseling. We will include weekly check-ins, as well as an online message board so that students can communicate with both the facilitators and each other. We want students to feel empowered by 1) their knowledge about helping others and 2) the information they will receive about seeking help. Students will be expected to learn some of the theory behind peer counseling, as well as different forms of counseling. Students should be able to discuss the role of a peer counselor in a university setting, as well as understand the limitations of a peer counselor. The students will learn the model of UC Berkeley’s Student-to-Student Peer Counseling. Even if you are not interested in a future as a counselor, come hone your communication skills that can be used in everyday situations. Students who successfully complete this course may be invited to join Student-to-Student Peer Counseling (SSPC) the following semester. This class is taught by 3 members of SSPC, Berkeley’s oldest on-campus peer counseling group.

How to Enroll:

CCN’s will be issued during our first meeting.

As we often have many more students wanting to attend our decal than there is room, we may ask you to write a short (SHORT!) essay about why you want to be in the peer counseling decal.
