About the Course:
Berkeley Engineers and Mentors is a mentoring program run solely by UCB students, where the main goal is to demystify the science and engineering career paths to elementary and high school students. We do this by teaching after-school programs at local elementary and high schools that stress math, physics, engineering, and other science related lessons. When you join BEAM, you are not only going to be an educator, but also a role model. We want to show all these younger students that fun, innovative people, just like them, are science and engineering students. Interested in joining? Make sure to come to our infosession:
Infosession
Date: 9/6/11 (Tuesday after Labor Day)
Time: 7-8:30 PM
Place: 240 Bechtel Hall
The DeCal class consists of a weekly instructional class for our mentors (you!). This class is 1.5 hrs maximum and is on Monday night, 7:00-8:30pm. At this meeting, you will be instructed on how to teach that week's lesson to your assigned school. Sometimes we will also have guest speakers or workshops that concentrate on improving each member's mentoring skill.
Apart from the weekly class is the weekly mentoring session, which can take place on any of these days: Tues, Wed, Thu, Fri. Each mentor gets assigned to one school, meant to fit each mentor's schedule. You will be at the school, mentoring for 1.5 hrs, but travel to the school can reach 30 mins, so make note of that.
If your week is just packed, but you want to mentor on the weekend, then have we got what you want! Every semester, we staff Lawrence Hall of Science's Ingenuity Lab, where we teach and have fun with kids and their families visiting the science museum. There is something in BEAM for everyone!
Apart from the class and mentoring session, the only homework is a weekly blog post dedicated to your feelings about how the mentoring session went and a semester project, which will be assigned half-way through the semester.

How to Enroll:
To become enrolled in the class, you must come to the first DeCal meeting, which will be announced on this site and at the infosession, and attend the mandatory mentor training up at Lawrence Hall of Science, which takes place the Saturday after the first DeCal meeting.
