About the Course:
This class will focus on becoming familiar and comfortable with the technical aspects of (digital) SLR photography and how to produce the types of photos under the umbrella term of “photojournalism.” A particular emphasis will be made on understanding the job of the photographer as a journalist, not just a picture taker. Students will also learn about ethics, the use of Photoshop, how to gather cut line information, and the necessity of a photo to tell “the story.” Students will also be introduced to the concept of a photo story.
Course Structure
Class will be held once a week for 2 hours, split into lecture and critique. Weekly photo assignments will apply photographic techniques demonstrated in lecture. Students will upload each week’s assignments to an online gallery at www.photodecal.org so that members of the class can view and comment on each other’s images. Each week’s photos will be reviewed in class (through the online gallery) during the critique portion to provide feedback to each other.
Necessary Materials
A (Digital) SLR-type camera will be required for this class. Digital is recommended. Students may use a film camera. It is do-able, but students must be familiar with how to use film already. They must be aware of the costs associated with buying and developing film and be willing to spend the time developing and scanning images for weekly assignments. There are two darkrooms located on campus available to students for a fee: in Wurster Hall and in the ASUC Art Studio. Or students can pay for film development at a local drug store (such as Longs, or Walgreen’s).

Course Policies
A passing grade will depend on attendance, participation in the critiques; and the completion of a report on a photographer, a final portfolio, and weekly assignments, including the photo story.
How to Enroll:
The first day of class will be Wednesday Feb. 11, 2009.Enrollment is restricted by Course Entry Codes. Class size is approximately 15-20 students. Come to the first day of class in order to enroll. For more information or to be placed on the waitlist, please email photodecal@dailycal.org.
Due to high interest, there will be an application process. You must email photodecal@dailycal.org to be placed on the waitlist, attend the first day of class, and fill out the application. I’m sorry I can’t let everyone in. It is necessary to keep the class small in order to have productive photo critiques.
Note: An SLR camera will be required for this class. Digital is recommended.
The course will be open to all students on campus, but will also serve as the training for new Daily Cal editorial staffers. Spots are reserved for new hires in the Daily Cal photo department. The class is aimed at any students interested in photography and/or photojournalism. Previous completion of a basic photo class, such as one taken in high school, is highly recommended. Students interested in applying to The Daily Californian can access the application at apply.dailycal.org.
