About the Course:

First, please visit http://www.calpeacepower.org to check out our magazine.

The purpose of this class is to create a magazine that will interpret current events and culture through the lens of principled nonviolence and conflict transformation, as a resource for the UC Berkeley community.

Students will learn about peace journalism and work together to create the publication, whose articles will also appear on a website we create. Students will gain or hone writing, editing, and publishing skills as they work together individually and in teams.

Instruction will include mini-lectures by the course facilitators; facilitated group discussions on the readings; guest lectures; and research/writing/editing exercises. There will also be an optional Saturday discussion early in the semester, for students who need a more thorough introduction to nonviolence and conflict transformation.

The class will also be an opportunity for students to talk together to deepen their understanding of nonviolence and conflict transformation.

How to Enroll:

Mondays, 4-6p, 223 Wheeler
Stop by anytime

We’re looking for students with an academic background in nonviolence (especially those who have taken PACS 164A and 164B), students who are familiar with conflict work, and students with journalism skills and/or publishing experience. That being said, we strongly encourage anyone who is interested in filling any of the roles listed below to join the DeCal.

Roles in the publication include (but are not limited to): writers; editors; page layout; graphic designers and artists; business and advertising coordinators; printing and distribution; web designers and managers; and grantwriters/development coordinators.

In addition to specific roles, some projects and tasks, such as fundraising, advertising, art, and layout, will be delegated to committees. Students will be required to serve on at least one committee and complete the required tasks assigned by that committee.
