About the Course:

The Teach in Prison Decal aims to provide students with a unique community service experience as they tutor prisoners in San Quentin state prison.

There are few areas of professional or personal interest that this program doesn't enrich: law, psychology, politics, and curiosity to name a few.  And while you're learning about both the California and Federal corrections systems, you'll be helping eager students obtain their high school diplomas.  One morning a week (M-Th., 8:15 AM - 11:30 AM), during a pre-scheduled time that is convenient for you, groups of students will travel to San Quentin and tutor inmates in a class led by a teacher in the prison’s education department.  Teach in Prison also features guest lecturers such as prison psychologists, guards, scholars, and former inmates.

How to Enroll:

The only requirement — per San Quentin regulations — is that tutors be at least 21 years of age.  Students will also be required to pass a background check (traffic violations and juvenile violations aren't scrutinized).  A vehicle is not required, but is extremely helpful.

There is a high level of interest in this rare opportunity to see, from the inside, how a prison actually operates.  It's a safe, exciting, and enriching experience.  Given the high demand of the course, you may find it beneficial to drop a brief e-mail letting us know you're interested.

First class is on Wednesday, September 3rd.

To speed things up, please send administrative questions and initial contact e-mails to the address listed below, and not the faculty sponsor.  Thank you.

Addendum 9/3/08: This decal is now totally full.  We cannot honor any new student requests to add, so please don't send e-mails of that nature to the facilitator or faculty sponsor.  We hope you consider joining us in the spring.

For students who attended the 9/3 session and still have questions, please attend our office hours this Friday, 3:30-4:30 PM at the Free Speech Cafe (attached to Moffitt Library).  Due to the large volume of e-mails we have received, most messages sent after today's session will not be directly responded to.
