About the Course:
This is an introduction to writing a fantasy or science fiction short story. We will go over conventions of short fiction, in addition to those characteristic of the genres. We will also briefly explore the history and evolution of this genre and its various sub-genres (i.e. quest fantasy, urban fantasy, space opera, steampunk). The course is based on facilitator instruction with ample student input and discussion.
Students are expected to participate in discussion of readings, which may include published stories, student stories, and other works as assigned. The first half of the course is instruction-based, while the second half will be centered around discussion and active student participation as the class transitions into the traditional fiction workshop format.
By the end of the semester, participants will have gained a better understanding of science fiction and fantasy within a historical context; produced their own short story within the genre; and learned how to function within a writers’ workshop. How to Enroll:
The application will consist of a 5-10 pages (double spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 font) of a short story, preferably science fiction or fantasy, but it's okay if it's not. Please submit it by September 5th to sff.decal@gmail.com.
