About the Course:

Four hundred years of change in the practices of musical performance has produced a musical framework that is drastically different than what it had been before. In this course, we will attempt to recreate Baroque music as it was conceived by the composers who wrote them. This includes playing on harpsichords, gut strings, concave bows, and wooden flutes, as well as adopting certain musical practices that seem to be banned by modern technique. The result? a more relaxed, resonant, organic timbre that comes from allowing the instruments to speak for themselves.

There will not be much homework for this class, other than practice as necessary. Towards the end of the semester, we will have a 45-minute to 1-hour concert, to which you are welcome to invite all your friends. As such, grading will be based mainly on participation and performance.

Please feel free to contact any of the facilitators at the email addresses listed below might you have any further questions.

How to Enroll:

Previous experience with musical instruments (that originated in the Baroque era) is necessary. If interested in this course, please send an email to Roger at the address provided below with your instrument(s) and years of experience with each. Violists and cellists are especially welcome!

CCN’s will be issued within the first few days of class. The first day of class will be on Monday, September 11.
