About the Course:

We will meet once a week and discuss various forms of poetry that you will be required to write in and workshop during the following week. The emphasis of this course is designed in order to find one's own poetic style by learning from others and their techniques. Techniques will range from the classic sonnet, ghazal, haiku, Oi Li Po, Limerick, as well as understanding line breaks, beat patterns, effectiveness of punctuation, and playing with sounds.  This course is designed not as a tool for coming up with new ideas to write on, but more so to find one's own style within the poetic cannon. It is also a chance for some students to workshop some of their poetry without having to wait for graduate school to do it in! This course consists of about a half hour lecture and readings, with the rest of the time spent in workshop.
