About the Course:

Join the Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal and the fight against Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer in the Asian and Asian American population!

More than 10% of Asians and Asian Americans carry the Hepatitis B virus. Vaccination programs have not been effective, since most Asians and Asian-American carriers are infected at birth. Due to a lack of education and public health policy to address Asian carriers of Hepatitis B, most do not know that they have the disease and do not treat it or prevent transmission to the next generation. Of those who do not get treatment, 25% will die from liver cancer or cirrhosis.

The Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal will provide opportunities for students to understand Hepatitis B issues and gain real-life public health outreach experience. Students will be working in the local and national community to spread awareness and influence care of Hepatitis B carriers.

This course is an invaluable opportunity for premed students, as well as those concerned with Asian American and public health issues.

The class will involve outreach and community projects including speaking to health providers, schools, and community members that are at risk. Of course, as a DeCal, the students will develop the initiative to propose and carry out projects of their own.

NEW THIS SEMESTER: We’re happy to annouce that students this semester will have the unique opportunity to attend field trips down to the Stanford Medical Center and Asian Liver Center to witness actual liver surgeries and meet up with the Stanford Jade Ribbon Campaign staff.

How to Enroll:
