The Brain and Medicine
About the Course:
This course focuses on medical research about the brain. Specifically, it will be an overview of current research topics in the field of cognitive neuroscience with a concentration on those concepts gleaned from human patients.
We will begin the course with a general introduction to the brain. We will then move on to disorders of the visual system and neuroplasticity. Next, we will cover motor control in Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Disease and action representation in apraxia. Disorders in memory will then be examined in Alzheimer’s Disease, amnesia, and semantic dementia. Then, deficiencies in language will be addressed with aphasia, in attention with ADHD, in cognitive control with schizophrenia, and in social interactions with autism.
The main goal of this course is to elicit interest in patient-based neuroscience rather than to test on the information. As a result, the course will be easy (and it should be as a 1 unit DeCal!). After completion, I hope students will have developed a fascination for research done at the intersection between medicine and science. By the end of the semester, I also hope students will be able to read and understand scientific papers published in the field.
How to Enroll:
Unfortunately, this course only has a lower division portion. This course is aimed to give freshmen and sophomores the oppurtunity to take a brain-related course that most students can only take during their upper division years.
No prerequisite courses are necessary.
