About the Course:

Our goals for this semester are to understand the theory and application of 3D printing in the field of tissue engineering, to work with novel hydrogels, and to facilitate further interest in tissue engineering research technologies. The course will include one hour of lecture and construction per week.  Students will learn about the theory and practical applications of 3D printing and hydrogels. They will also learn about the mechanical operation of 3D printers.  Finally, students will also construct and use a 3D bioprinter to print biological tissue.

There are no official prerequisites for this course. We take students from all years and all majors who are interested in the topic at hand. However, as this is a highly technical project, students with experience in electrical engineering, programming, prototyping, cell culture, and especially tissue engineering principles are preferred.

Two excused absence (or one unexcused) are allowed throughout the semester. Students who miss more will not pass. Three unexcused late attendances (5 minutes past Berkeley time) count for one absence. A passing grade (P) is awarded to students who complete all course material.

Historically, this course has been extremely popular and unfortunately, due to lab space and the collaborative nature of this DeCal we only have space for ten (10) students.

If more than 10 people are present at the info-session, a waitlist will be processed and course control numbers will distributed with priority given to those with previous experience and most qualified.
