About the Course:

This course will introduce students to the countries of the Modern Middle East: Syria, Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran and also offer an overview of the monarchies of the region. It’s important that we pay close attention to the history of Iraq and Iran and the war on terror (Iraq and Afghanistan). In any Modern Middle East course a review of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is also essential. We will also study the differences between the Sunni and Shia and how it relates to the conflicts that are facing Iraq and Syria today. This course also will review the Arab spring in Tunisia, Libya, Syria, and Egypt and later on we will shift our focus to the Syrian civil war and the impact of ISIS in the region. In order to understand the current situation in Syria and Iraq we will take a general look at the Iraq invasion in 2003 and the war on terror by former President George Bush, we will end our course by discussion the historical deal made between the 5+1 and Iran- Iran nuclear deal.
