About the Course:

The purpose of this class is to give students a contextual and historical understanding of Tupac Shakur's life and legacy by tracing out the beginnings of Hip Hop music and culture. We look at the beginnings of African-American history and the slave trade and continuously draw from this history to see its relevance to modern Hip Hop. We will examine the different “eras” in Hip Hop and attempt to characterize them. We will also do close readings of lyrics to observe both the techniques used in crafting them as well as the meaning behind them. The first portion of class time will be for lecture while the second portion will consist of activities which may include group work as well as time spent working on final projects. Students will learn to value and emulate Tupac's work ethic and involvement in his community. Students will ultimately take the combination of these activities to develop skills that will allow them to find what flow is right for them and craft a 2-verse rap song. This song may be featured on the mixtape the class may produce collectively.
