About the Course:

Fencing is deeply rooted in Cal athletic tradition, with a team existing in some form since the founding of the school (it's the oldest club!).  The sport itself dates back much further, and can be counted as one of the longest-practiced combat disciplines in history. Fencing today is a fast-paced and challenging sport at the same time, it is accessible to a wide range of ages, and stylistically can be tailored to all levels of athleticism.

Students will:

1. Be introduced to the history and sport of fencing;

2. Practice skills and techniques;

3. Compete against each other and in tournaments.

The course will be a combination of lecture and “hands-on” collaborative learning. Lecture will cover basic principles of fencing, including history and application of the sport, as well as various topics such sports psychology. The fundamentals will be taught to novice fencers, with more advanced techniques taught to students with prior fencing knowledge. Special attention will be placed on bout technique and theory of the sport. Collaborative learning will take place with open bouts among students.

Class is currently tentatively scheduled for Sundays from 1.30 - 3.00 p.m. and for those taking the class for two units, also Tuesdays from 9:30 - 11:00 p.m..
