About the Course:

This course intends to take an investigative look into the early seasons of the FOX animated television series The Simpsons (1989 - ) and its lasting cultural impact in the United States and beyond. While there is discrepancy as to the exact seasons which constitute the so-called Golden Age of The Simpsons, this course will primarily focus on seasons 4 through 8 (1993 - 1997). Central to the course will be an examination of the circumstances surrounding the production of the show itself. This examination includes, but is not limited to, understanding the predominant culture of the 1980s and 1990s, the rise of television in society, the medium specificity of animation, and the significant producers, showrunners and staff writers.

Our attendance policy requests that students please show up. Two episodes are screened per class. Two small papers and one final project. Weekly readings are assigned to help guide class discussions. Showing up, participating and appreciating all that is great about The Simpsons will likely merit a passing grade.

How to Enroll:

Course Entry Codes will be handed out on 1/25. We will accept all student who are interested in the course. If necessary, we will use a lottery system if there are more students interested than there are seats. Fair is fair.
