About the Course:

We're looking for authors and illustrators with original ideas for children's stories/illustrations! ChiLD's goal is to help its students create excellent, classy (or not), and beautiful children's literature. The main focus of the class is the creation process, and therefore we will workshop consistently. However, we will also study the publishing industry and demystify the process of submission. Therefore, we will also have a few assignments: reading what's being published today and researching publishing houses and agencies. Finally, look forward to our guest speakers—this year, we’ll be welcoming children's lit reviewers, publishers, editors, agents, and professional authors and illustrators.

The most important thing to keep in mind when applying to our class is that our purpose is to create works of children's literature, so please only apply if you have ideas for a book or illustration portfolio, and if you are willing to work consistently on those ideas throughout the semester. We do not ask you to complete a book (especially if it's a longer work), but we do ask you to continue working at the story/illustrations that you're creating every week.

Note: this semester we are expanding our DeCal to include students who are interested in reviewing/editing children's literature, but not necessarily creating it. Students who prefer this option should indicate this on the application, and start thinking about a suitable final project.
