About the Course:

This course involves learning about a genetic blood disorder known as thalassemia. Emphasis will be placed on the biological and social/psychological aspects, patient perspectives, and public education. Students will have the opportunity to listen to lectures by guest speakers (many from UCSF Benioff Oakland Children's Hosptial), who specialize in their respective fields, and to participate in question and answer sessions with these experts. Students will also get the opportunity to work hands-on by creating and completing individual project and outreach event that demonstrate what they learn in class. This course is intended for students who are motivated to learn about thalassemia from a variety of different angles.

As briefly mentioned above, students are expected to complete an individual project and an outreach event that will help further develop thalassemia outreach in the Berkeley community. There are short quizzes at the beginning of class as quick refreshers of the previous guest lecturer's talk. Students are allowed up to 2 absensces, whether it be excused or not excused, after which a No Pass grade will be issued. This is a DeCal course that is heavily based on attendance and participation, as there will be discussions, project work, and amazing guest speakers who are highly respected in their fields!!!

A syllabus has been uploaded if you would like to know more about specific details about the grading and expectations of the THAL at CAL DeCal. It also includes a complete schedule of all the topics we will be covering and the guest speakers we will be inviting to the course.
