About the Course:

NOTE: We are NOT exclusively engineering students. ALL MAJORS are welcome!

Do you have an interest in science and want to mentor younger students? BEAM is an outreach program that teaches after-school science and engineering lessons at elementary, middle, and high schools in the East Bay. In addition, this decal will also focus on various mentoring and teaching techniques and encourage your growth as a mentor and teacher.

Weekly attendance at the BEAM mentor meetings (Mondays, 7:00-8:30pm)  is required. This is where you will learn the lesson plan and science background for the week and how to teach it. We will also have occasional guest speakers and presentations. Additionally, each mentor will sign up for a weekly mentoring session at a local elementary or middle school. Mentoring sessions are Tuesday through Friday, any time between 2pm and 6pm. (We collect schedule information and assign sites based on your availability.) The total time commitment is about 3 hours per week.

To pass the course, you can't miss any more than 2 Monday night meetings. Mentoring sessions at the school sites cannot be skipped. Absences must be made up through various outreach activities throughout the semester.

How to Enroll:

To join BEAM, you must attend our MANDATORY Infosession (Monday, January 25, at 7:00 PM, 105 Northgate!)  We hope to see you there!
