About the Course:
In this class, we will pursue Beat poetry from its earliest foundations in New York City, its journey to the Bay Area of California, and its exportation of Europe. We will also examine the lives of selected writers of the Beat Generation, and discuss how their biographical information influenced their work. We will also study how music, religion, politics, sexuality, substance abuse, and other forces influenced the poetry of the Beats during the 1950s and 1960s.Through lecture and group discussion, we will examine in detail the poetry and prose of several Beat writers including, but not limited to,Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Diane di Prima, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Farlinghetti, and Joanne Kyger.
For our weekly readings, we will engage in active collaborative discussion and pay particular attention to the syntax, rhyme, and sense of Beat poetry.
