About the Course:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is a nationwide program founded in 1971 by Gary Iskowitz at CSU Northridge. Through VITA, volunteers provide free tax return filing services to low- to moderate-income earning individuals and families.

Berkeley VITA is a year-long commitment. The DeCal is held in Fall 2015 followed by volunteering in Spring 2016. To volunteer in the spring, students must first pass the IRS-sponsored Basic Certification Exam which is released in late November. No previous experience with or knowledge of taxes is required from students.

This DeCal is designed to give students a holistic understanding of the income tax. On one hand, the DeCal will prepare students for the Basic Certification Exam and volunteering in Spring 2016. On the other, it will explore prevalent social issues that afflict residents of the East Bay and how certain tax policies can help alleviate poverty. Special emphasis will be placed on the Earned Income Tax Credit which is one of the most effective anti-poverty tools in America.

Anyone who is interested in ...

• A career in tax accounting or related financial services
• Learning about socioeconomic disparity
• Public policies
• Knowing how to file a tax return
• Volunteering

... will find the VITA program richly rewarding. Students will gain practical knowledge, have opportunities for leadership, and make a measurable economic impact on our local community. More details in the syllabus!
