About the Course:
This course provides a chronological overview of THE FUNK, the musical genre that became Hip Hop circa 1980. Topics include the histories and philosophies of the bands that comprised this genre, focusing primarily on the particular groups whose music most directly influenced the birth of Hip Hop. Social movements among the African American, Latino, and European American communities will also be considered as they relate to this musical era. The timeline covered begins in the 1940’s with the birth of Bebop and ends in the mid ‘80’s with Boogie Down Productions’ album “Criminal Minded”, which is hailed as the solidifying agent in Hip Hop’s longevity. Assignments include listening to a whole lot of Funky music, as well as readings on the histories, philosophies, endeavors, and achievements of Funk bands such as Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, The Last Poets, James Brown and Curtis Mayfield. The concepts in digital music composition known as sampling and looping and how they account for the birth of the DJ will also be a primary focus in the discussions.How to Enroll:
