Social Issues, Social Action
community service /
field work course
About the Course:
Social Issues, Social Action is a service learning course providing the opportunity to explore the root causes and real solutions of important social issues, while also discussing the meaning of service. The course has both academic and hands-on components: through weekly readings, seminars, guest speakers, student presentations and films, we will seek an intellectual understanding of the issues; experiential knowledge will come through a student-chosen placement at a Bay Area public service agency, and through participation in a weekend service project. Additionally, there will be a focus on reflection. The course is a chance to connect to the community beyond campus, consider your role in shaping a better world, and spend your extracurricular time meaningfully.
Topics include (but not limited to): environmental justice, education & race, globalization/fair trade, transportation/social justice, community planning, volunteerism/service/community, environment, health issues, and women.
This class is not limited to issues affecting Berkeley and the Bay Area. Where appropriate, international prospectives will also be included in course discussions and reflection.
Class will be held in 4 Haviland on Wednesdays from 530-7pm beginning Wednesday, January 31st, 2007.
