About the Course:

Thinking about starting course?

Facilitating a course and looking for a community to work with and share your ideas?

Not sure about facilitating a course, but interested in education?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this could be the course for you. The Craft of Facilitation is open to all undergraduates —whether you are facilitating a course this semester, planning a course for next semester, thinking about facilitating a course sometime in the future, or just interested in education.

The course will be theoretical, practical, and personal. Though these three strands are not always so distinct, here’s a description of it broken down into it the theoretical, practical, and personal. Hopefully, it gives you a better sense of the course.

Theoretical

We will be looking at different streams of thought about education — including your own! — what it should be, what it could be, and what it’s for.

Practical

We will be exploring how to design “educational experiences,” big and small—ranging from preparing an entire course to planning a single class. We will also be using and exploring different structures/processes that help promote communtiy, inclusion, participation, discussion, dialogue, critical thinking, inquiry, and reflection.

We will be designing and implementing educational experiences, either for the course you are currently faciliating or the course you plan on facilitating someday. With the class as your audience/participants you will have the opportunity to practice your facilitation skills by piloting educational experiences you’ve designed (e.g. a lecture, discussion, activity, etc.). In addition, you will be able to receive supportive and honest feedback from other members of the class before trying it out in your own course.

Personal

We will be looking at where and how “you” fit into the educational experience as an undergraduate facilitator. In doing so, we will also explore how “you” impact or change the educational experience. And conversely, we will also explore how the educational experience impacts or changes you. Through honest reflection, sharing, dialogue, and discussion, hopefully you will be able to explore what it means to be “you” as a facilitator and as a person.
