About the Course:

The class will encourage community building through valuable outdoor experience. It will focus of cooperative learning. Students will gain outdoor skills and leadership ability. The course will emphasize individual participation and respect for community and environment. The wilderness will be our classroom and collaborative learning will be our method of instruction. Students will learn through experience and shared knowledge during weekly meetings.

Course Learning Objectives:
-students will learn the skills necessary for a multiple night backpacking trip.
-students will learn to respect and appreciate the environment exercising low impact techniques (Leave No Trace)
-students will learn cooperative conduct and mutual respect that is a basis for creating healthy relationships.

Evaluation Procedures:
Students will be evaluated on participation in
weekly meetings. (Credit for the class will be rewarded on a Pass/No pass basis.)
-Attendance: To receive a pass students must attend 8 out of 10 of the mandatory weekly meetings.(Attendance of all meetings is highly encouraged)
-Work: To receive a pass students must: – must participate in meeting activities. – make one journal entry per class meeting. -complete the ecological footprint assignment -turn in a reflective final project

Class Meeting:
Wednesday 4-6pm

This class will take place rain or shine. Hiking in the rain is fun, and as springtime in Berkeley is often wet, we will be having a lot of it. Be prepared to get wet and possibly muddy. Sufficient rain gear and hiking boots are highly recommended.

How to Enroll:

If you are interested in taking the course, please show up on the first day of class, 1/24, to 2325 Tolman. Class is from 4-6. Bring an pen and paper for filling out a personal info form. If you do not come to the first day of class you can not enroll.
