About the Course:

This course has a long history at UC Berkeley. Previously known as “Pilipino-American Contemporary Issues,” it has been modified this year to encourage critical reflection on the Pilipino/American community at UC Berkeley by providing a space to discuss contemporary and historical Pilipino/American organizing.
Though this course will be responsive to the interests of class participants, there are three main themes that will be discussed in class: the politics of higher education, Pilipino/American organizing at UC Berkeley, and historical perspectives on Pilipino/American organizing. Through informal lectures, field trips, media presentations, and class discussions, we will critically examine the role of Pilipino/American organizations at the university and the significance of identity in organizing. We will discuss topics such as the Third World Liberation Front, the Ethnic Studies Strikes of 1999, Proposition 209, Pilipino Studies, Pilipino Cultural Night, Pilipino/American organizations at UC Berkeley, and the Anti-Martial Law Movement.
While the central objective of this course is to develop politically engaged and historically informed leaders and community members for the Pilipino/American community at UC Berkeley, this course is open to anyone who is interested in social justice and learning more about student organizing around identity. It is the vision of the course facilitators that students will come out of the class with critical understandings that will enable them to work for positive change in their own lives and communities.
