About the Course:
Whether you’re interested in a particular country, Syria-Iran-Lebanon-Egypt-Israel, or you are looking for a touch on them all, this is your course!
It will provide an introduction to the conflict in the Middle East. There is absolutely no prior knowledge required for this course. The purpose of this course is to provide an environment for productive discussion and debate of the numerous issues that will be covered. We will discuss the roots of conflicts in the region and their escalation in the past half century. It is important to note that I will try to provide instruction about numerous states in the Middle East and attempt to bring about a better understanding of the entire region, in addition to the Israeli-Arab conflict that many students are familiar with. Students will develop an understanding about the history of the region as well as the social, economic and political motivations behind current conflicts that now affect the lives of millions of people. The class will meet once a week for two hours. Grading will be based on class participation, attendance, and a final paper (length of which will be determined by your participation in classroom discussion).
How to Enroll:
This course is 2-units, P/NP only, which meets on Tuesdays 6-8pm in 101 Moffitt. There is a limited number of seats so please make sure to come to the first day of class, Tuesday September 5, 2006, when I will give a overview of the course and provide the Course Control Numbers for interested students.
