About the Course:

There is a place for lectures, Powerpoint presentations, and textbooks; for treadmills, dumbbells, and Bollywood.  But there is also a place for sock balls, marshmallows, Nerf balls, and hula hoops.  This decal will provide the physical space and time to explore these university-setting-neglected materials.  Channeling the creativity of the child inside, we will construct and play recreational games together.  We will reflect on our personal experiences with play, re-learn how to engage our bodies in ways that go beyond the weight-room, the cardio-room, the track, or the soccer field, and shift the focus of our minds from didactic to experiential learning.

Classes will consist of self-analysis, group discussion, physical engagement, small- and large-group collaboration, and creative problem solving in a fun and dynamic setting.  They will be held both inside and outside depending on the weather and on the planned activity.  The majority of class time will be spent on various interactive activities, but we will also spend time to discuss personal experiences, as well as introduce literature on the multiple aspects of play.

Assignments: two surveys for course feedback, weekly articles/videos, 2- 1-2pg papers, and a group project that will be done primarily during class time.

Grading: students will be evaluated based upon their participation in the course and all of its components (interactive games, assignments, etc).  A breakdown of the point values can be found on the syllabus.

Attendance: students may miss one class and still be able to pass the class, but will lose a participation point for that day.  If a student misses a second class, they must make it up by attending and participating in an event related to recreational play outside of class.

How to Enroll:

The class will be limited to 16 students.  Interested students must fill out an application here: http://tinyurl.com/8jxca9f by August 24.  Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have been accepted by August 27 and will be emailed the enrollment information.
