Teach In Prison
African American Studies/ 198
community service /
field work course
About the Course:
The Teach in Prison DeCal aims to provide students with a unique learning opportunity as they tutor inmates inside San Quentin State Prison.
This program enriches many professional or personal interests: law, psychology, politics, sociology, and will also be helpful to those who are curious about the California corrections system in particular.
While learning about the effects of incarceration, you'll be helping eager students work toward their high school diploma.
One morning a week you'll join a group of fellow Cal student tutors for the brief commute to San Quentin. Once there you'll assist inmates in the prison’s education department. We also meet on campus one afternoon per week to discuss the prison system (Monday 5:00PM-7:00PM). These meetings often feature guest lecturers, including: prison psychologists, guards, Boalt criminal law experts, writers, documentarians, and former inmates.
How to Enroll:
*CCNs will be provided to admitted students after the first mandatory meeting (by August 27). If you need units for financial aid etc... it is a good idea to enroll in a back-up, in case you don't make the cut.
The only requirements — per San Quentin regulations — is that tutors be at least 21 years of age. Students will also be required to pass a background check. Traffic violations and juvenile records aren't scrutinized, but any felony charge in the past 10 years, misdemeanors in the past 5, or DUI in the state of California will prevent your approval.
A vehicle is not required, but is extremely helpful.
There is a high level of interest in this rare opportunity to see, from the inside, how a prison actually operates. It's a safe, exciting, and fulfilling experience. Because this Decal offers such a rare opportunity, it is very popular and fills up EVERY semester.
The telebears waitlist is irrelevant, as students will be manually added only after receiving a Course Entry Code in class. Since this is the deal, it is essential that you attend the first mandatory meeting (if you don't, you won't get in... it seriously is mandatory).
NB: Juniors who are not yet 21 but interested in an organizational or leadership role are encouraged to send us a brief introductory e-mail.
Our first mandatory class meeting will be Monday, August 27, from 5;00PM-7:00PM. 243 Dwinelle **If you do not attend you will not be admitted into the class.
You MUST fill out our questionnaire prior to the mandatory meeting: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFh0RFBBc0Y1Mm5iTktGNF9iMnVvaWc6MQ
