Jazz Combo
About the Course:
This is a performance based class in jazz. Students will be required to participate in weekly practices, perform in a few concerts, and do 3 homework assignments over the course of the semester relating to jazz. Attendance each week is mandatory. Attendance will be 70% of the entire grade. Homework assignments will revolve around jazz composition and transcription, as well as a short final paper. Due to the nature of this course, class size will be limited. In order to join this DeCal, the UC Jazz Program, or our Beginning DeCal, students must audition. These auditions will be held during the first week of school. For updated information on auditions, please check ucjazz.berkeley.edu.
How to Enroll:
Enrollment will be done by audition. See ucjazz.berkeley.edu for Audition information. In general, students looking to get into this DeCal must:
-Show proficiency in Jazz performance and theory
-Play a wide range of scales (chosen at random during the audition process)
-Demonstrate a jazz solo
-Demonstrate a handle of multiple styles related to jazz (Latin music, Funk, etc.)
Different skills will be assessed for different instruments as well (for example, rudiments for drummers). Those who get into the class will be notified by a posting outside the UC Jazz studio the following week. Thanks for choosing the UC Jazz Combo DeCal!!! We look forward to seeing you this fall!
