About the Course:
This course is intended to introduce students to the strategic side of Scrabble while maintaining its recreational aspect. No prior skill is required. Topics such as anagramming skills, rack management, and "power" 2- and 3-letter words will be discussed.
Each class will consist of a short lecture followed by a game of Scrabble with other students. During this time, the facilitators will individually help students use new strategies. There will also be an in-class tournament with prizes the last three weeks of class.
Homework will consist of playing one game of Scrabble per week outside of class, with the first scoresheet due on the third week. There will also be a midterm and a final consisting of material covered in the class.
You need a board for this class! The original version, deluxe edition, and folio edition are acceptable - the board must have the official 15x15-tile Scrabble layout seen here: http://raptureinvenice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/board.png. This means that versions such as Scrabble Junior, Express Scrabble, and Super Scrabble are not suitable for the course. Electronic versions are also unacceptable, as you will be expected to play the physical version with a classmate during class time. A board is NOT needed the first day of class, as enrollment will be decided after the first meeting. If you are unsure if your board is acceptable, email me at calscrabble@gmail.com.
Further class details are explained in the syllabus.
How to Enroll:
Students interested in enrolling in this DeCal should show up for the first day of class. There will be a brief application (name, contact info, etc.), and CECs will be emailed out afterwards. If you can't make it to the first day of class, email me at calscrabble@gmail.com.
If you have a dire need for the units, please consider finding a backup course just in case there are not enough available seats in this class.
Class will be held Thursdays 2-4pm in 109 Morgan, starting August 30th.
