About the Course:

Chomp your way through an All-You-Can-Eat Cult Movie Buffet!

COURSE OUTLINE:
In this class, we will be exploring the dynamics of the cult film. What qualifies a film as “cult”? Why do certain societal groups choose to identify with cult films in specific opposition to mainstream cinema? What are the social constructs that make up the Midnight Movie? Is there a style or subject matter that inherently qualifies as cult? What aspects of cult film cannot be found in Hollywood films? Do cult films provide viewers with something different than Hollywood films? Why do so many cult directors have a tendency to use the same actors in all of their films? What is the cult film’s connection to the postmodern? What light can psychoanalysis shed on our understanding of cult cinema? Through weekly lectures, readings, screenings, and discussion, we will attempt to answer these questions and more by studying the workings of cult cinema and the culture that surrounds it.
