About the Course:

This is the listing for Fall 2011. For Spring 2012, please see this page: http://www.decal.org/courses/2158

Only seven blocks from the UC Berkeley campus, the Youth Support Program (YSP) at Willard Middle School started in 1994 as a mentoring program for middle school youth. In 2006, we expanded to provide volunteers with the option of designing and teaching their own after school classes, a unique opportunity found nowhere else at Cal. The program provides in-depth training to volunteer teachers in subjects ranging from classroom management and lesson planning to cultural competency and the significance of the Berkeley achievement gap.

The program is designed to address barriers to learning by providing after-school math and English classes free of cost to Willard students. Our English and Math Support classes work with failing students to build basic skills and earn credit towards graduation. Math Scholars helps underrepresented groups of 6ht and 7th graders test into and succeed in Honors Algebra, while English Scholars is designed to provide writing instruction for students who are interested in taking AP or Honors English in high school.

How to Enroll:

It's not too late to join! We will be accepting applications through the last week of September.

In order to ensure the best possible matches, we ask that our teachers turn in an application. We then interview each of our applicants to find out more about their experience and interests so that we can find a class that will work well for them.

To apply, fill out the application below or by downloading it here: Teacher Application
