About the Course:

Innovation Management 101

Innovation! Over the course of the last few years, our country has experienced dramatic change in economic activity and development. The word “innovation” is thrown around freely by politicians, news organizations and business people assuring the citizenry that it is the solution to all of our current and future economic woes. But what does “innovation” really mean when you boil it down to a micro level within an organization? How do we create “innovation” and from what, where and whom does it come from? What are the environmental factors that play a role in the innovation process? How does management fit into the equation?

This course will introduce students to management practices associated with driving innovation within organizations.  We will explore the innovation life cycle, from generating the idea to bringing the innovation to end users. How to make wise investments in innovations and the different types of organizations that are innovating. We will also look at the transfer and sale of technological knowledge and the hurdles that need to be overcome to successfully do it.

The second half of the course will take a look at “clusters of innovation” and why innovative firms tend to stick within the same geographical region as other firms, capital and educational institutions. We will explore what local governments can do help create these clusters form as well as do case studies on the biggest and most successful cluster of innovation, Silicon Valley, and the factors that made it such an epicenter for creativity. Other geographical areas of importance are countries like Israel and Ireland with their positive business environments and we will touch on an international theme with a guest lecture.

The goal is that by the end of the course, students will have a clearer understanding behind the innovation process and how to successfully manage it. They will be able to spot innovation friendly policies and have an idea of what types of cultures within organizations help bring about this type of creative idea generating process for measurable results. They will understand what organizational management can do to make a creativity-friendly environment and how access to resources mixes up the equation. Ultimately, they will be able to apply methods in organizations that breed innovation.
