About the Course:
Many individuals today are not as well-versed in personal finance as they should be to take advantage of the financial services that tailor to their specific needs.
This course is designed for students who want to establish a foundation in financial literacy and to apply that knowledge to assist the low-income population in the community. The course ideology is focused on reinforcing content through application and real-world interactions. At the end of the thirteen weeks, students should be able to become their own financial planners and serve as an access point to a better utilization of financial services for low-income individuals. Students will be able to volunteer their time by working one-on-one with clients to help them achieve better financial stability or by providing referrals to professional financial management services.
The Suitcase Clinic organization will be collaborating with the course instructors to teach the students the “case-working model”. Students will be taught how to appropriately and effectively assist individuals while making a sustainable difference in people’s lives at a routine facility. Students are able to apply their knowledge to an existing model of internal support and services already in place at the Suitcase Clinic.
Specifically, this course will explore topics including credit cards, debit cards, student loan debt, credit reports, credit scores, and more. Through these topics, the course aims to train students and to equip them with the necessary tools to enhance and/or supplement the financial knowledge of underprivileged individuals.
The course also consists of 6 student-led workshops (fieldwork) held at The Suitcase Clinic. Workshops are held once every three weeks throughout the semester. They consist of student presentations and discussions (based on the material taught in the DeCal), followed by one-on-one Q&A sessions for clients if time is provided.
